Brazilian waxing appointment in a private Greenville, SC studio

Your First Brazilian: What Actually Happens in the Room

7 min read

Almost nobody's first Brazilian is as bad as they imagined, and the reason is simple: the fear is about the unknown, not the wax. So here is the entire appointment, described plainly — what you'll be asked, what you'll wear, how long each part takes, and what the next 48 hours look like.

Before you arrive

Let hair grow to about a quarter inch — roughly two weeks. Shorter than that and neither wax nor sugar can grip it properly, which means going over the same area twice.

Exfoliate gently a day or two beforehand, not the morning of. Skip retinols, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid for 48 hours. Skip caffeine the morning of your appointment; it genuinely raises sensitivity. Shower before you come and wear loose cotton.

If you're on Accutane, recently had a chemical peel, or use prescription retinoids, tell us when you book. Those aren't automatic no's, but they change the plan.

The appointment, minute by minute

The studio is one client at a time, so there's no waiting room and no one else in the space. We start with a short consultation — hair growth, skin sensitivity, medications, whether you want Brazilian waxing or Brazilian sugaring.

You'll undress from the waist down and lie on a covered table with a drape. The area is cleansed and prepped. Then we work in small sections: apply, set, remove, move on. Most of a first Brazilian is 20 to 30 minutes of actual removal, inside a 45 to 60 minute appointment.

There will be a few seconds that sting. There will be more that don't. Talking through it helps, and so does breathing out on the pull rather than holding your breath.

Small sections, worked one at a time — not one long strip.

The 48 hours after

Expect pinkness and small bumps for a few hours. Skip hot showers, saunas, pools, and workouts for 24 hours, and wear loose cotton for the first day.

At the 48-hour mark, start gentle exfoliation two to three times a week and moisturize daily. That single habit is what separates people who get ingrowns from people who don't — the full method is in how to stop ingrown hairs.

Rebook for four weeks out before you leave. Consistency is what makes the second and third appointments dramatically easier than the first.

Common questions

How long does a first Brazilian wax take?
Plan on 45 to 60 minutes, including consultation and prep. The removal itself is usually 20 to 30 minutes.
Should I shave before a Brazilian wax?
No. Hair needs about a quarter inch of growth — roughly two weeks — for wax or sugar paste to grip it.
What do I wear to a Brazilian wax?
Loose cotton clothing. You'll undress from the waist down and be draped throughout the appointment.
Is it normal to be nervous?
Completely. The studio is private, one client at a time, and you can ask for a pause at any point in the appointment.
